Exploring the Modern Threat Landscape

The rising tide of cybercrime, coupled with the evolving tactics of cybercriminals and the borderless nature of digital transactions, is making it increasingly difficult to gauge the overall economic impact of cybercrime.

In the Annual Cyber Threat Report from July 2021 – June 2022, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) saw:

  • an increase in financial losses due to Business Email Compromise (BEC) alone! The cost was over $98 million, which averaged a loss of $64,000 per report!
  • a rise in the average cost per cybercrime report to over $39,000 for small business, $88,000 for medium business, and over $62,000 for large business. An average increase of 14 per cent.
  • 25 per cent increase in the number of publicly reported software vulnerabilities (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures – CVEs) worldwide.
  • 150,000 to 200,000 Small Office/Home Office routers in Australian homes and small businesses vulnerable to compromise.

Navigating Cybersecurity Challenges

The potential risks associated with cyber-attacks on businesses have never been more evident. The advancement of technology has brought unprecedented opportunities, yet it also comes with vulnerabilities that everyone, including businesses must be acutely aware of. Understanding the potential financial implications of a cyber-attack is vital for safeguarding your company and ensuring its continued success.

Understanding Varied Cyber Threats

In the realm of cyber attacks, there are various types of threats that business owners need to understand. These encompass:

  • Spam or Phishing Attacks: Deceptive communication aiming to extract sensitive information or trigger malicious interactions.
  • Denial-of-Service (DoS) Attacks: Purposeful attempts to overwhelm online platforms, causing service disruptions.
  • Virus or Malware Infections: Infiltration of malicious software compromising data and system functionality.
  • Intellectual Property (IP) Theft: Unauthorised access to or distribution of proprietary business information.
  • Hacking: Intrusion into computer systems with unauthorised intentions, potentially using the company’s identity.

Hacking remains a significant apprehension, with cybercriminals masquerading as legitimate entities to acquire private data. Maintaining vigilance is crucial, even when situations appear genuine.

Proactive Measures for Defence

While you can’t eliminate all risks, you can take proactive steps to defend yourself:

  • Regular Updates: Keep software and systems current.
  • Strong Passwords: Utilise robust authentication credentials.
  • Additional Security Layers: Implement heightened security protocols.
  • Collaborate with Experts: Partner with trusted IT/Cybersecurity specialists.

Assessing the Fallout: Post-Cyberattack Consequences

A cyberattack’s aftermath can be severe, especially in interconnected systems. Outdated infrastructure and weak security exacerbate the impact. Beyond immediate costs, such as ransoms, repercussions encompass reputational damage, legal entanglements, and business disruptions. Distrust from customers and potential lawsuits amplify the financial toll.

Bolstering Business Defence: Strategies for Security

To counteract cyber perils, adopt these essential practices:

  1. Professional IT Support: Even small businesses benefit from robust IT services to deter hackers and mitigate long-term costs.
  2. Cyber Insurance Consideration: Explore cyber insurance options to provide coverage against hacker-induced disruptions.
  3. Vulnerability Awareness: Identify weaknesses and remain vigilant, employing cautious online behavior to prevent cyber threats.

Dealing with the Costs: What a Cyberattack Can Mean

Cyberattacks wield substantial financial consequences, particularly for smaller businesses. Recovery demands time, while monetary losses and compromised trust inflict lasting harm. Active defence through robust cybersecurity and cautious practices proves paramount.

A Call to Proactive Defence

Reflect on the potential costs of a cyberattack on your business. The impact can be particularly detrimental for smaller enterprises. Reducing such risks requires immediate action—prioritise robust cybersecurity and cautious conduct to ensure your business’s resilience and prosperity in our interconnected digital landscape.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Unleashing New Capabilities for Enhanced Productivity

On the 9th of March, Microsoft 365 Copilot was introduced and has since been making waves as a trusted assistant for work. With the Microsoft 365 Copilot Early Access Program, more customers are gaining access to this innovative tool. The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from enterprise customers, including Goodyear, General Motors, The Walsh Group, and Avanade, who recognise its potential to revolutionise work.

Microsoft is also rolling out the Semantic Index for Copilot. This new capability will be available to enterprise customers with Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 licensing, whether they are using Copilot or not. The Semantic Index is a sophisticated mapping of user and company data. Instead of simply searching for keywords in file names or bodies, the Semantic Index understands the context and relationships within the data. For example, if you inquire about the “March Sales Report,” Copilot will not only look for documents containing those words but will also recognise that sales reports are typically produced by Kelly on the finance team using Excel. This conceptual understanding allows Copilot to determine your intent accurately and assist you in finding the information you need. The Semantic Index for Copilot not only improves the responsiveness of Copilot itself but also enhances enterprise search results.

Now, let’s explore the exciting new capabilities that Microsoft 365 Copilot is bringing to the table.

Copilot in Whiteboard

Microsoft Teams meetings and brainstorms are about to become more creative and effective. Using natural language, Copilot in Whiteboard allows users to generate ideas, organise them into themes, create designs, and summarise whiteboard content. This capability enables more productive and efficient meetings, as Copilot can provide ideas on specific topics. Leveraging the power of Microsoft Designer, Copilot can transform ideas into original images that complement the text. Feedback solicitation, work summaries, and the use of Microsoft Loop components take collaboration to the next level.

Copilot in PowerPoint

The integration of OpenAI’s image generator, DALL-E, brings a new dimension to PowerPoint presentations. By simply using words, users can ask Copilot to create custom images that enrich their slides. From a black and white image of a bulletin board with sticky notes to postcards with an artistic photography style, Copilot delivers impressive visuals. Additionally, Rewrite with Copilot optimises presentation text by transforming bullet points into paragraphs (and vice versa), making it more concise, and generating original titles.

Copilot in Outlook

Microsoft has made it easier than ever to craft impactful communications with Copilot in Outlook. When drafting an email, Copilot provides coaching tips and suggestions on clarity and tone, ensuring that messages are effective and well-received. Whether it’s delivering sensitive information or sending a clear message under tight deadlines, Copilot offers valuable guidance.

Copilot in OneNote

Copilot in OneNote enhances notetaking and organisation capabilities. Leveraging user input, Copilot helps in improving the look of digital notebooks, reorganising content, adjusting formatting, and highlighting key points. Whether it’s summarising notes into bullet points, identifying unanswered questions, or creating comprehensive plans, Copilot streamlines information management.

Copilot in Microsoft Loop

With Copilot in Microsoft Loop, teams can stay synchronised by summarising all the content on a page. Copilot generates summaries, allowing team members to quickly catch up on the progress made. Summaries can be edited, more details can be added, and they can be sent to others as Microsoft Loop components, facilitating collaboration.

Copilot in Microsoft Viva

In the near future, Microsoft 365 Copilot will extend its capabilities to Microsoft Viva. Specifically, Copilot in Microsoft Viva Learning helps users design personalised learning journeys, discover relevant learning resources, and schedule time for assigned trainings. Viva Learning academies are now generally available, allowing organisations to curate role-specific and line-of-business-specific experiences for individuals, supplying engaging and relevant learning opportunities.

As Microsoft continues to bring Microsoft 365 Copilot to customers, they still are committed to their AI principles and Responsible AI Standard. Microsoft prioritises user privacy, reviews AI systems for potential threats, filters harmful content, and applies technologies like InterpretML and Fairlearn to detect and correct data bias. Transparent decision-making processes, limitations, and source references empower users to review and adjust content based on subject-matter expertise.

With the introduction of these new capabilities, Microsoft 365 Copilot is set to empower users, boost productivity, and enhance collaboration across various Microsoft platforms.

M365 Collaboration Capabilities with AI

M365 Collaboration Capabilities with AI

Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) alongside Microsoft 365 (M365) can revolutionise productivity and efficiency. With the recent introduction of Copilot, an AI-powered assistant, the possibilities for streamlining workflows and enhancing collaboration are endless. Let’s explore how AI and M365 is transforming the way we work:

Collaborative Document Creation

M365 offers a suite of powerful tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more. AI capabilities embedded within these applications enhance collaboration and productivity. For example, AI-powered grammar and style suggestions in Microsoft Word ensure that written content is polished and professional. Smart data analysis in Excel allows for quick insights and recommendations. And intelligent design suggestions in PowerPoint help create visually appealing presentations.

Enhanced Communication and Collaboration

M365’s collaboration tools, such as Microsoft Teams, combined with AI capabilities, further enhance communication and teamwork. AI-powered features like real-time language translation, smart meeting scheduling, and automated transcription of meetings help overcome language barriers and improve collaboration among global teams. Additionally, intelligent content recommendations and search capabilities within Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive facilitate efficient information sharing and retrieval.

Data Insights and Analysis

M365’s integration with AI technologies enables users to unlock valuable insights from their data. With Microsoft Power BI, for instance, AI algorithms can identify patterns, detect anomalies, and make predictions, allowing businesses to make data-driven decisions. Whether it’s sales forecasts, customer behaviour analysis, or operational optimisation, AI-infused data analysis tools in M365 empower organisations to drive efficiency and stay ahead in today’s competitive landscape.

Personalised Productivity

AI in M365 can intelligently adapt to individual users’ preferences and work patterns, boosting personal productivity. For instance, Microsoft Outlook’s AI-driven email prioritisation helps users focus on important messages and automate repetitive tasks. Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual assistant, can provide personalised reminders, schedule management, and even anticipate user needs based on previous interactions.

Efficient Coding Assistance & Quality Improvement

Copilot, developed by OpenAI in collaboration with Microsoft, is designed to assist developers by debugging and generating code suggestions as they write. By leveraging machine learning models trained on vast amounts of publicly available code, Copilot can provide contextually relevant code suggestions, improving coding speed and accuracy. With Copilot integrated into M365, developers can save time and focus on high-level problem-solving instead of repetitive coding tasks.

Security and Privacy

Microsoft is committed to ensuring the security and privacy of user data when utilising AI technologies like Copilot. Copilot follows strict security protocols and adheres to privacy regulations to protect sensitive information. User feedback is anonymised to maintain privacy and by using Bing Chat Enterprise, commercial users can harness the benefits of AI with peace of mind that user and business data is protected.
