The updated Google Maps with ads will feature company logos on the map, and feature ads of products, such a current promotion at the bottom of the phone/page.
When you search for say "coffee shop" to get one close to you, instead of showing your results that are actually close to you, it will favor first companies that pay google to get first pick, tricking the user that it is closer than other coffee shops that are actually closer to you. However, the small "Ad" tag will be place on these first items.
Is this a way for Google Maps to get rid of old listings that are no longer active? Advertisers are sure to be open for business. Would you go for the first option that is easier to select, even if it means you will never know if it was the closest one, or just the one with the biggest marketing budget?
Seems that we have to work with what we get for free, and then adapt to market our businesses accordingly.
